Scholastic Book Wizard and P.E. Cares

Parents,

I have added the Scholastic Book Wizard to the left side of our blog. You can use this to look up book levels. Just type in the title or author.

We have had a great start to P.E. Cares! Thank you for all the cans coming in. We have until November 20. Please see the P.E. blog (linked on the right side of this blog under School Blogs) for more information. Thank you!!

Conference times were sent home with your third grader yesterday. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing the wonderful things your child has been doing in class! Please let me know if there is a conflict with your conference time.

The competition is on this year!  Let’s see which Michigan team has the biggest fans at Georgetown prior to their showdown in Lansing on November 2nd, the Saturday before we kick off our Book Fair.

This is the fun part, if MSU fans bring in more coins Mr. Kooiker will wear MSU colors and if U of M fans bring in more coins Mr. Bowen will wear U of M colors on Wednesday, October 30th for Spirit Day!  Which team will it be?  Help us decide with your loose change!

Along with supporting your team your loose change will help us purchase books for classroom libraries.  This helps get more kids reading and those kids reading more.

The All for Books money we collect also helps readers beyond our school and community. Scholastic Book Fairs matches monetary donations with a donation of up to one million books to the Kids In Need Foundation and Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc.

Please send in your donation prior to October 29th.  Baggies and book slips will be sent home the week of October 21st.  We’ll be weighing the coins at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, October 29th to determine the winner!

Please join us on October 30th and wear your favorite team’s apparel.

Your act of kindness helps to bring more knowledge, imagination, and love for reading into the lives of our students.

Thank you!  Mrs. Havens, Chair of Book Fair and Georgetown Staff

It’s World Read Aloud Day!

In celebration of World Read Aloud Day we’d like to share just a little about reading in our classroom. Here it goes:

Our classroom read aloud book: We just started reading The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. This is a story about a mouse who loves music and stories. On his journey he meets a princess and a rat and we can’t wait to see how the story goes.

Our book recommendations: We have a bulletin board in our classroom that is covered with wonderful book recommendations. As students complete a book they can fill out a form to tell others about the book. This is a great way to learn about new books.

Reader’s Choice: As we read books together we have a chance to either vote ‘yes’ I would recommend it or ‘no’ I would not recommend it to others. IMG_4170
Our reading challenge: We have a reading challenge going on in our classroom. As students finish a book they fill out a book form and they get displayed on our wall. Our goal is to make a trail of books all the way across the classroom. We’re almost there!

Bustin’ Through Books

Bustin’ Through Books Boot Camp begins Monday, February 1!   Every child who participates will be logging their minutes read at Boot Camp.  They can also log minutes read in the classroom and at home.

If you would like to have them add their minutes from home, you can find their reading logs on the school blog at this location:  BUSTIN THRU BOOKS LOGS There is a log for each child who is a camp member.

Every single minute spent reading is VALUABLE!  Thank you for your support of your reader and this program!

Bust through Books!

On February 2, we begin to devote a portion of every day to focused time for reading.  This will be called BUST THROUGH BOOKS BOOT CAMP.

We need your help to get this up and running!  You can help in three different ways:

1.  If you are a DAD, volunteer to spend a day running our boot camp.  It’s easy…and fun.  Requirements:  Sign Up by clicking on this form; Wear Comfy Clothes; Bring your reading material (work and just for fun); SHOW UP WITH A SMILE, sense of humor and your books.  Jeff Wressell, Lily’s Dad, will be heading up the volunteer list.

2.  Donate $1.00 to your child’s classroom.  The money will go toward buying timers and bean bags.  Write:  BUST THROUGH BOOKS on your envelope, along with your child’s name and classroom.  (We will also take used vinyl bean bags and timers)

3.  Donate any well loved books from your home.  We have students who love to learn about non-fiction topics.  If you have any books on the topics listed below, please donate them to our program.  Books can be dropped off in the library with the incredible, wonderful Mrs. VandenBerg!
