Social Studies Update

In third grade we study Michigan. We have started our Geography unit and have been learning about relative and absolute location and natural and human characteristics.  We have also started to learn about the landforms and bodies of water in Michigan.
Today we got out the maps to identify these places:

LANDFORMS in Michigan:
– Peninsulas: Upper and Lower Peninsula
– Islands: Mackinac Island, Beaver Island, Isle Royale
– Mountains: Porcupine Mountains, Huron Mountains
– Sand Dunes: Sleeping Bear Dunes

BODIES OF WATER in Michigan:
– Great lakes: Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Superior
– Rivers: the Grand River
– Waterfalls: Tahquamenon Falls
– Bays: Grand Traverse Bay, Saginaw Bay

We had fun looking at the Map of Michigan:

Math Test and Map Project Reminder!

We will have our Unit 2 math test tomorrow. We reviewed in class and that review page was sent home with your son or daughter to study tonight.

Michigan Map Projects are due on Monday!!  Please remind your third grader about this project and ask him/her  about their progress. We identified all the characteristics in class, but your child may need some assistance remembering a few.

MEAP begins again next Tuesday!

Social Studies Quiz and Project

Today we reviewed the Vegetation and Climate of Michigan. A study page will come home today. Please help your child study for the quiz on Wednesday.

Geography Project:

Today, the information went home for the social studies map project. Your child should have 2 things: A Michigan map and an orange sheet with directions/rubric on one side and the natural and human characteristics on the other.  In class we identified the natural characteristics and human characteristics of Michigan. This includes landforms, bodies of water, cities, highways, lighthouses, and bridges.  We have been learning about these and have identified them on the Michigan map.

As part of the project your child should label these places on the Michigan map that was provided.  Don’t forget neatness and color. There is a checklist that also goes with the project to make sure full points are received.

We have identified these characteristics in class, however, your child may need some guidance to label correctly and find specific locations. You may also use any notes from class.

This project is due Monday, October 17.

Have fun with your map! Let me know if you have any questions!

Social Studies Review

Tonight’s homework is to review for the Social Studies quiz tomorrow. We have been studying absolute and relative location. Your third grader should be bringing home 2 review papers tonight. One we completed in class and the other is a U.S. map. Please use these to review and practice. For example, ask:   Michigan is East of_________. Then use north, south, and west. This is relative location. I encourage use of the map as a visual.

Social Studies Test

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will have a Social Studies Assessment. We have been studying all about how Michigan became a state. Today, we reviewed and answered the questions of What? When? Who? and How? involved in Michigan becoming a state. Your third grader should have brought this home tonight to study. Please remind them or help them study to be prepared for the assessment.

Thanks!

As part of the project your child should label these places on the Michigan map that was provided.  Don’t forget to make it neat and color it. There is a checklist that also goes with the project to make sure you get the full points.

We have identified these characteristics in class, however, your child may need some guidance to label correctly and find specific locations. You may also use any notes from class.
