News This Week!

Parents,
A few things to know about this coming week:

  • Multiplication Flashcards: We have started learning multiplication and have begun with the 5s facts. We have been learning different ways to understand multiplication- drawings, repeated addition, and arrays. Your child has a flashcard folder. This will come home each night for practice and should be sent back each day to school so they can be used in class.
  • Library: We have library on Wednesday. You may have seen books come home last week. Your child’s goal is to make sure they choose at least 2 good-fit books and they may choose 1 for fun. Please help your child remember to return books to school when they are done.
  • Homework Packet: A homework packet is coming home today (Monday). It will be due next Monday. The packet consists of 2 math pages and a reading and math fact log.
  • Social Studies: Our first unit is Michigan Geography. We have been studying relative and absolute location. A study guide will come home today. We will have a quiz on Wednesday.

3rd Grade Update:

Parents,
Check out what we have been learning in 3rd grade:

Writing: We are working on opinion writing. We will form an opinion sentence and work hard to support our big idea with evidence from our life. Ask your child what their opinion sentence is!

Social Studies: This week we will finish up our unit by learning about the different regions of Michigan. We will review and have the Geography test on Friday!

Math: We continue working on learning multiplication facts. Consistent practice of facts at home will help tremendously with our classroom math work. We are using multiplication and division with word problems and finding area.

Reading: We are learning more about characters and learning to notice what the character says and does as we read. This helps us describe the character and make predictions. We are reading Because of WInn-Dixie and we are learning to think and respond well as a reader.

Coming Up!

We have several events coming up this week and next:

Wednesday, June 2: Field Trip

Thursday June 3: Raey Guang visits Georgetown from Taiwan. Some of our students will be meeting and spending time with their pen pals.

Friday, June 4: Reading Counts Party 8:45- 11:15.

Field day will also be coming up next week. More details to come.

3rd Grade Update!

Here’s what’s happening in 3rd Grade:

Writing: In writing we are finishing up our fiction writing as well as getting started on our research. Each student has chosen a person or a state to research. They have found a book on their topic from the library and have been doing a lot of reading. We have been gathering information that we are learning and writing down questions we still have. We have also organized our information and talked about what is most important. For example, to teach someone about a person, we might want to focus on the birth date, childhood, what makes them famous, other important facts, and death. If we are writing about a state we would organize our information into headings such as state capital, landforms, climate, and places to visit.

Math: We have been working hard on comparison problems using our multiplication and division.  Example: Sam has 6 books. Max has 36 books. How many times as many books does Max have than Sam.     6 times as many.       Continue working on multiplication facts at home, especially 6, 7, and 8 facts.

Reading: In reading we have started discussing expository text features. We have been reading non-fiction texts and we have noticed features such as a summary on the back of the book, table of contents, maps, diagrams, bold words, and many others. All of these features help readers gather information and understand the topic they are reading.

Spelling: Spelling lists went home yesterday. Spelling lists for Mrs. B’s group will come home at a different time. Please practice these words at home. Write them in sentences and spell them out loud. We will use them in class and then test in the next week.

3rd Grade Update!

We have been keeping busy and learning so much in third grade!

Math: In math we are working on multiplication and division. We have been learning all kinds of strategies to use and have been working on writing word problems to put in a class book. We have been practicing flashcards in class and then we practice facts with a partner. As we practice with a partner, our partner places a check mark next to the facts we still need to work on. You will see this practice sheet come home (a thin piece of paper with mixed facts).

Reading Workshop: We have been working in reading groups and have been reading independently and with our groups. As each group finishes reading, they will then present their book to the class in a fun and interesting way. This may include a puppet show, interview, advertisement, or a art piece.

Social Studies: We just started our unit on Michigan history. Our trip to the museum was a wonderful introduction to this. We began talking about the history of our own community and are now talking about the history of Michigan, the early settlers, and Native Americans. We have been looking at different artifacts and clues that help us learn about the past. We are historians!!!

Holiday Shop: Next Wednesday, the 9th. A note went home about this today.

Holiday Program: Thursday December 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville.

Reading Counts Marking Period Ends: Friday December 11. Please remind your child to do their reading at home so they are ready to take a quiz.

Holiday Party: Friday December 18. A note went home about this yesterday.

This Week in 3rd Grade!

Reading Workshop: We have started talking about making inferences as we read. We make inferences when we use clues from a story to figure out something that the author has not directly stated. We can make inferences about characters and their traits and personality. We read The Paper Bag Princess and used clues from the story to describe Princess Elizabeth. Today, we used sticky notes as we read independently to write down our inferences about the characters.

Math: In math, we are working on Unit 3. We have been reading story problems and using a math mountain to organize our thinking in order to solve the problem. We have found out how helpful it is to draw out the problem so we can correctly solve. It helps us know when to add and subtract.

Social Studies: We are near the end of our Geography unit. We have been learning about how we change our environment of Michigan and also how we adapt to our own environment. I loved looking at the Michigan maps. They look great!
