A few more things to know………

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
As you see school work coming home there may be  a number grade (3,2,1) on some of them.
Use this as a guide:
3- proficient
2- progressing
1- beginning

HOMEWORK:
Third grade homework consists of reading 20 minutes, five nights a week and multiplication fact practice for 5 minutes, five nights a week. We have been talking a lot about goal setting to help us get better at reading and math facts. Lots of our third graders have made action steps to practice facts and read at home as a way to reach their goal. The reading and math fact log should be returned to school every Monday.

Math Fact Cards: You will see your child’s blue fact folder filling up. As your third grader works on their math fact log, please help them choose one set of count bys (one color) flash cards to work on each night.  We have learned the 5s, 2s, 10s, 9s, 3s, 4s, so far. It is starting to become apparent which kids are regularly practicing their math facts and which kids are not. Please help your child gain confidence with their math work by practicing these at home.

Math Practice Page:
Each Friday, the third graders complete a math fact practice page. Last week they did the 5s fact page. When your child completes all the problems correctly, they will move on to the next practice page. This Friday, your third grader will either try the 5s page again or will try the 2s page for the first time. Please look for this practice page to come home so you will know what facts to practice with your child.

The next early release Friday is October 23. Dismissal is at 12:15.

We are working on applying our knowledge of the basic facts to math word problems and area problems. Practice pages went home today. Please help your third grader practice for the next one on Friday.
Homework:
Reading and Math Fact Log due every Monday.
Please help your child remember to sign on the days they read and practice facts.

Social Studies: We have started our Michigan Geography unit. We have learned what Geography is and we are studying absolute location and relative location. We are using the map to learn how to use direction words such as: North, South, East, and West.

Writing Celebration: Last Friday we celebrated the completion of our personal narrative stories. Each student  identified a line in their story that they were most proud of. Each student shared their line and then we had a writing museum. We walked around the room to read each others writing and notice the great things each writer did to make their story so powerful. The students had a lot of encouraging words for their classmates!
Take a look at a few pictures from our celebration!

Scholastic Book Order: An October book order went home today. If you plan to order, please do this online by next Monday, October 28. As always, thank you for your orders as it allows our class to earn free books!

Football Game this Friday: One of the varsity football players has been volunteering in our classroom on Fridays. As part of this program, our class is invited to cheer him and the team on at the beginning of the football game this Friday! I sent an email about where and when to meet this Friday. I’m looking forward to seeing our class there!

Turkey Trot: October 29

Picture Retakes: October 29 . If your child is getting retakes, be sure to send in the original picture packet that was sent home today.

Math Tests: The unit 1 math test was sent home today. Please review this with your third grader and reflect on areas to keep practicing as we move forward in math.

Today in class, we started our Michigan Geography unit. We began by thinking of some facts we already know about Michigan. Then we did some exploring by looking at the map of Michigan. We had a great time looking closely at the map. Each partner group contributed a question that we hope to answer during our studies of Michigan.

Update: Week of October 7

Last Friday, we ended the day with a teamwork activity. Each team was given some straw constructors and was given a challenge of building a structure. First, they had to come up with a plan to build their structure. In the time given, each team learned that their plan changed a few times, but each team built their own unique structure. We had a lot of fun with this group activity!

**You will see a new Reading/Math Fact log in your child’s folder. Please remind your third grader to sign it when they complete their reading and fact practice. This should be returned next Monday, October 14.

Here’s What We’ve Been Learning:
Writing
: We are finishing our drafts this week and have been working on strategies for revision. We will be working on finishing final drafts by Friday.

Math: We continue our lessons with multiplication and division and word problems. We will review this week and plan to take our test on Friday. A review page will come home.
This week will start our practice pages. Beginning Friday, we will take our first multiplication quiz on 5s. Our curriculum teaches them in this order:  5s, 2s, 10s, 9s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s. As your child passes each quiz, they will move to the next multiplication fact.  For example, if they pass the 5s quiz on Friday, next Friday they will take the 2s quiz.  If they don’t pass the 5s, they will take it again the following week. Each student will be working at their own pace and tracking their own progress.

Multiplication Practice:
Please help your child practice their multiplication facts in the following ways:

* Flash Cards- these should be coming home each night in your child’s folder. Pick out the specific facts your child needs to work on.
* MobyMax: We are currently working on review of addition and subtraction facts, but your child will move on to multiplication very soon.
* Another great tool is an app called, Flash to Pass.  It’s free and can be downloaded on most devices.  On this app, students can practice one specific grouping of facts.  This is different from Moby Max because they are all mixed together.

Reading: We continue to work on building a reading life and working toward our goals. We are using reading logs to keep track of our progress and we are making sure that we are choosing good-fit books and finishing the books we start. We have been making sure we focus as readers so that we can talk about our books when we meet with a partner.

Social Studies: We are finishing our Growth Mindset and character trait lessons and next week we will begin our Michigan studies with our first unit: Michigan Geography.

Week of Oct. 8

Parents,
Here are a few things you will need to know:

  • Our Growth Mindset mantra this month is: MY BRAIN IS LIKE A MUSCLE THAT GROWS. Today, we made a new goal for ourselves. We put it right on our name tag as a daily reminder. The goal is: I will work hard to help my brain grow strong!
  • Jet’s Pizza night: October 11
  • Early Release this Friday, Oct. 12
  • Snack: Please help your child remember to pack one healthy snack each day. I usually have a snack available for forgetful situations. If you are able to donate a box of graham crackers, our class would appreciate it!
  • Multiplication Fluency Practice Page: On Wednesdays (and sometimes more often) we assess multiplication fact fluency. This helps the students take responsibility in their learning. Students will be given a multiplication fact page one fact group at a time. This Wednesday we will start with the 5s. When the 5s page is passed,  your child will move on to the 2s. The order we will follow is: 5s, 2s, 10s, 9s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s. Your child has a graph where they will keep track of their progress so they know what facts to work on. You will see the practice page come home with a note attached that says: “GOT IT!” or “NOT YET”. This will let you know what facts to work on for the next practice page.
  • We made our GOAL!!!!
Each day we use a scoreboard. If our scoreboard has more smile tallies than sad face tallies, we earn a smile magnet. So our class set a goal of earning 10 smile faces. When the class met the goal they would receive a treat from me. So today was the day! We enjoyed cookies and apple cider. Way to go, class!!
