Just a reminder about our Holiday Party next Thursday, December 21! All the information can be found HERE on the blog post from a few weeks ago.
If you are planning to come to the party, make sure you have filled out a background check form: HERE.
By next Wednesday (12/20):
- send in a wrapped box
- send in a small gift that your child will pass out to each classmate (26 students in our class). Gift suggestions: erasers, pencils, wrapped candy, small party favor, bookmark, etc.
****If you have questions, please let me know!
REMINDER: Dismissal time is 12:15 this Friday, Dec. 2. If your child plans to order a sack lunch to bring home, please let me know. Thank you!
More band-aids: Our class is in need of more band-aids. If you are able to donate, we would appreciate it. Thank you very much!!
We will have our math test on Friday. This will cover place value, addition and subtraction problems, and word problems as well as some rounding.
REMINDER: Please make sure your child is practicing math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) for at least 5 minutes each day. Their goal is to master one operation before moving to another. Fact fluency is so important in understanding math concepts. I strongly suggest using MobyMax as a way of practicing. We have used this in class, but please let me know if your third grader does not remember their username or password.
We will also have a short quiz on Friday that will cover the public issue of wind farms in the Great Lakes. A review sheet should come home today. Your third grader will need to give one reason people think wind farms in the Great Lakes is a good idea and one potential problem with wind farms in the Great Lakes.
Tomorrow is our Just Write celebration from 9:30-10:00.
Make sure your child brings whatever is needed to dress as the person they researched. Each student will have their writing to share as well as information to tell you about their work.
We hope to see you!
A few things:
This Friday is all school Pajama Day!
No school for students on Monday, March 9. Parent/Teacher conferences are Monday March 9, Tuesday March 10, and Wednesday March 11.
This is a reminder about our field trip to the Outdoor Discovery Center this Tuesday the 21st. We will be leaving right away in the morning so please make sure your child is at school on time. Remember to dress your child in warm clothes as we will be outside all morning snowshoeing and I hear it will be cold that day! Please send a sack lunch as well. A few parents have contacted me about attending with us. I will be contacting them today with more details. Thank you also for sending in $1.00 for the cost of the trip! We are looking forward to a fun day!

Just a reminder about our gift exchange as part of our party on Friday. Please make sure your child has brought in their gift ($3-$5) and $1 donation to the party. Thank you! Friday will be a pajama day for us!!
We will have our sentence quiz tomorrow. Your child should have brought their word cards home to practice tonight. Please practice them with your child by writing them in sentences.
Friday we will have pizza for lunch as part of a birthday treat! Please send in a drink (juice, water). Thank you!
Please remember to continue reading and practicing math facts with your third grader over our two week break. This will be very important as we transition back to school in January. Thank you!
Wishing your families a happy holiday!!

We have been working very hard and learning a lot! Here’s what’s happening in third grade:
Writing: We have started brainstorming big ideas and opinions in order to generate a personal essay. The third graders have been working well with this and are beginning to think of mini stories to support their opinion (thesis).
Math: We have been working on understanding two step word problems and deciding which operation to use. We have learned different strategies to help with this. Our math test will be next week. Keep practicing multiplication and division at home!
Science: The students have Ms VanderStel for science and they will conclude their light unit with the test today (Thursday).
Reading: We are finishing our unit on character traits and identifying ways to describe characters in our text. We’ve also been discovering how characters change in the story and what makes them change.
Reminder: It gets very cold and windy on our playground. Please help your child to remember to bring (and wear) a coat, hat, and gloves. Thank you!
Our field trip is next Thursday the 30th! We will need to leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please be sure that your child is at school on time. Your child will also need a sack lunch on this day. We will be outside and it may be muddy so please dress your child in appropriate clothing with tennis shoes (no flip flops or open toe shoes).
I have contacted all parents that volunteered to join us on the trip. We are looking forward to a great day!
Miss Van Arkel 🙂
