Update: Week of November 11

Writing: We continue working on our persuasive speeches. We are learning about how we write to our audience while using convincing words.

Math: We have been working on 2 step word problems. These can be tricky! Today, we started our math review for our test on Wednesday. The review will come home tomorrow. Please help your third grader by going over word problems and continuing to practice multiplication facts.

EXAMPLES TO PRACTICE:
1. The pet shop had 8 cages of mice, with 4 mice in each cage. 5 mice escaped. How many mice were left in the pet shop?

2. I baked 47 cookies, but 7 were burned and thrown away. The rest were shared equally among 8 people. How many cookies did each person get?

Reading: We continue our study of mystery books. Our third graders are becoming great detectives and are using helpful strategies to solve the mysteries in their books. We have learned about using a chapter timeline and collecting clues and suspects. They are becoming great thinkers as they read!

Social Studies: We started learning about the vegetation and climate of Michigan.

Homework:
Reading and Math Fact Log due every Monday.
Please help your child remember to sign on the days they read and practice facts.

A FEW REMINDERS:

WINTER GEAR: Please remember to send all the winter gear with your third grader. It is so helpful if it is labeled with your child’s name, too! We still have recess on cold and snowy days and the playground gets wet. Thank you for your help with this!

SNACK: Our class has one snack break in the morning. Please pack your child a healthy snack to support their learning. Please make sure the snack is separate from their lunch and that your child knows where the snack is placed in their backpack. Thank you!

BIRTHDAYS: If your child chooses to share something with the class on their birthday, our policy is no food. Your child can bring in items such as stickers, pencils, bookmarks, erasers, etc. to share with the class or you may choose to donate a book to the class. Thank you!

MOBYMAX: Please help your child remember to log on MobyMax to practice their math facts. Some students have made it to their multiplication and division facts! YAY!! Keep up the great work!

Math Test

Parents,

We will have our math test on Friday. This will cover place value, addition and subtraction problems, and word problems as well as some rounding.

REMINDER: Please make sure your child is practicing math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) for at least 5 minutes each day. Their goal is to master one operation before moving to another. Fact fluency is so important in understanding math concepts. I strongly suggest using MobyMax as a way of practicing. We have used this in class, but please let me know if your third grader does not remember their username or password.

We will also have a short quiz on Friday that will cover the public issue of wind farms in the Great Lakes. A review sheet should come home today. Your third grader will need to give one reason people think wind farms in the Great Lakes is a good idea and one potential problem with wind farms in the Great Lakes.

Field Trip Reminder

This is a reminder about our field trip to the Outdoor Discovery Center this Tuesday the 21st. We will be leaving right away in the morning so please make sure your child is at school on time. Remember to dress your child in warm clothes as we will be outside all morning snowshoeing and I hear it will be cold that day! Please send a sack lunch as well. A few parents have contacted me about attending with us. I will be contacting them today with more details. Thank you also for sending in $1.00 for the cost of the trip! We are looking forward to a fun day!

3rd Grade Update!

We have been working very hard and learning a lot! Here’s what’s happening in third grade:

Writing: We have started brainstorming big ideas and opinions in order to generate a personal essay. The third graders have been working well with this and are beginning to think of mini stories to support their opinion (thesis).

Math: We have been working on understanding two step word problems and deciding which operation to use. We have learned different strategies to help with this. Our math test will be next week. Keep practicing multiplication and division at home!

Science: The students have Ms VanderStel for science and they will conclude their light unit with the test today (Thursday).

Reading: We are finishing our unit on character traits and identifying ways to describe characters in our text. We’ve also been discovering how characters change in the story and what makes them change.

Reminder:  It gets very cold and windy on our playground. Please help your child to remember to bring (and wear) a coat, hat, and gloves. Thank you!
