Field Trip!

Our field trip is next Thursday the 30th! We will need to leave promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please be sure that your child is at school on time. Your child will also need a sack lunch on this day. We will be outside and it may be muddy so please dress your child in appropriate clothing with tennis shoes (no flip flops or open toe shoes).

I have contacted all parents that volunteered to join us on the trip. We are looking forward to a great day!

3rd Grade Update!

Hi Families
I have sent home reminders about conference times. I am looking forward to meeting with you to share the great things happening in third grade!

A note went home about the next Family Book Club. It will be Thursday March 21 from 6:30-7:30. We will be reading James and the Giant Peach. Please send the slip back so I will know who is participating. Thanks!

In math, we are finishing up telling time by the 1/2 hour, quarter hour, and before and after the hour. We have also been learning elapsed time. Please continue to practice time at home. We are moving on to our lessons on graphing.
We have been working hard on finishing our personal narrative writing. We will be working on writing to a prompt and then doing some research writing.
As readers, we have been working on using the strategies of questioning and visualization to understand a text.
The students have started science with Ms. VanderStel and are learning force and motion.

Have a great weekend!

As a reminder: There is no school on Friday, March 1.

A Few Reminders

Valentine’s Day:
Don’t forget to decorate a box for Valentine’s Day. A kleenex box will work well. If you can’t find a box, I have a few extra boxes and bags to decorate. Please let me know. Make sure it’s here by Thursday so the Valentines can be delivered. Class lists went home last week so Valentines can be addressed. Those can be sent in any time before Thursday. Thanks!

A Reminder for Science:
We are switching for Science again. Ms. VanderStel is beginning a unit on force and motion. If your child has a small toy car (like Hot Wheels), please have them bring it for a science activity tomorrow. Thanks!

Update and A Few Reminders!

Here is a 3rd grade update:
Writing
: We have finished our poetry unit and each student has created a poetry anthology. We very much enjoyed writing poetry and I can’t wait to share our published pieces at conferences!
Reading: As readers we are always thinking and using comprehension strategies to check our understanding. We have been working on our questioning/wondering skills by reading several stories including a few books by Chris Van Allsburg. We ask questions before, during, and after reading in order to understand what we read.
Science: The students have been doing some research on an animal and learning all about their habitat as well as adaptations that help them survive.
Social Studies: We have finished up our Economics unit and have just started learning about the History of Michigan. The History unit is a very interesting and exciting unit as we learn all about the Early People of Michigan and the Native American groups such as Ojibway, Ottawa, and Pottawatomi.

Math
: We have finished our multiplication unit on 0-5 and 9 & 10 facts. We will learn 6, 7, and 8 facts in a later unit. Right now, we are learning all about area and perimeter. My math group will be having our math test Thursday.
Please
continue to practice multiplication and division facts at home. It is very important that students practice facts to become fluent. This is vital to learning and understanding math concepts in later units as well as next year. Flashcards have gone home and if you have misplaced them you can always make your own or just write out the facts (1×4=4, 2×4=8, etc) Don’t forget to use Xtra Math as great fluency practice!

A Few Reminders!

Parent/Teacher conferences are Feb. 28-March 2. I e-mailed the conference schedule. Please let me know if you did not receive this. I look forward to sharing wonderful things of 3rd grade!
Please help your 3rd grader to remember to bring coats and boots to school. Temperatures will be turning colder again and our playground gets muddy and wet in areas. Thanks!
