Week of January 27, 2020

News from our third grade class:

Homework Reminder:
I did not send home a new math fact and reading log this week. I will be talking with the class about how they will be moving to more independence with this. This is an opportunity for them to show responsibility with their reading and math fact practice without using an at -home log.  Please continue the consistent reading and math fact practice at home- even making up your own chart to keep track! This is often the time of year where our third graders show growth and it’s the at-home practice that helps to maintain all their hard work. Thank you!

Homework Starting Wednesday: On Wednesday, your child will have a new homework assignment that they will need to complete on the computer. They will need to get on Clever to access this.  They may complete the assignment any time between Wednesday, the 29th and Tuesday, the 4th.

Valentine’s Day- REMINDER:
An email was sent last week regarding Valentine’s Day. Our class will be doing some activities throughout the day on Friday, Feb. 14. We will not need parent volunteers or donations. We will make Valentine bags in class. If your child chooses to pass out Valentine cards, please use the class list that was sent home last week.

Snack Donations: Our class could use a few snack donations to use on the days when a student forgets. Pretzels or graham crackers work well. If you are able to donate, please send it in with your child. We appreciate it!!

LOOKING AHEAD

Friday, January 31- early release. Dismissal at 12:15pm

WINTER BREAK. NO SCHOOL Monday February, 3 and Tuesday, February 4. School resumes on Wednesday, February 5.

Update: Week of November 11

Writing: We continue working on our persuasive speeches. We are learning about how we write to our audience while using convincing words.

Math: We have been working on 2 step word problems. These can be tricky! Today, we started our math review for our test on Wednesday. The review will come home tomorrow. Please help your third grader by going over word problems and continuing to practice multiplication facts.

EXAMPLES TO PRACTICE:
1. The pet shop had 8 cages of mice, with 4 mice in each cage. 5 mice escaped. How many mice were left in the pet shop?

2. I baked 47 cookies, but 7 were burned and thrown away. The rest were shared equally among 8 people. How many cookies did each person get?

Reading: We continue our study of mystery books. Our third graders are becoming great detectives and are using helpful strategies to solve the mysteries in their books. We have learned about using a chapter timeline and collecting clues and suspects. They are becoming great thinkers as they read!

Social Studies: We started learning about the vegetation and climate of Michigan.

Homework:
Reading and Math Fact Log due every Monday.
Please help your child remember to sign on the days they read and practice facts.

A FEW REMINDERS:

WINTER GEAR: Please remember to send all the winter gear with your third grader. It is so helpful if it is labeled with your child’s name, too! We still have recess on cold and snowy days and the playground gets wet. Thank you for your help with this!

SNACK: Our class has one snack break in the morning. Please pack your child a healthy snack to support their learning. Please make sure the snack is separate from their lunch and that your child knows where the snack is placed in their backpack. Thank you!

BIRTHDAYS: If your child chooses to share something with the class on their birthday, our policy is no food. Your child can bring in items such as stickers, pencils, bookmarks, erasers, etc. to share with the class or you may choose to donate a book to the class. Thank you!

MOBYMAX: Please help your child remember to log on MobyMax to practice their math facts. Some students have made it to their multiplication and division facts! YAY!! Keep up the great work!

Week of September 30!

I can’t believe we are entering into the month of October already! I have seen growth in our third graders and I am proud of their hard work as we learn new routines and expectations and dive into third grade curriculum!

READING and MATH FACT CALENDAR:
You will see a reading/math fact log come home today. As your third grader completes their at-home reading and math fact practice, they will fill out their reading log. A new one will be sent home every Monday and it should be returned the following Monday. Your third grader will sign the five days they did their reading and fact practice. We are using detailed reading logs in class so using an at-home log will support the reading that we are doing at school. Thanks for your help with this!

Math Fact Cards: You will see your child’s yellow fact folder filling up. As your third grader works on their math fact log, please help them choose one set of count bys (one color) flash cards to work on each night. As each color is mastered, move on to the next. We have learned the 5s, 2s, 10s, 9s, 3s, 4s, so far. It is really starting to become apparent which kids are regularly going over their math facts and which kids are not. PLEASE help your child gain confidence with their math work by practicing these at home!

PIZZA HUT READING CALENDAR:
(This is optional, but may be combined with our classroom reading calendar)
Our classroom is participating in the BOOK IT! program again this year to help encourage reading.  Your child will be bringing home a Pizza Hut Book It calendar with a reading goal on it beginning October 1.  Each time your child reads they may mark it on their calendar.  At the end of the month please have them return their calendar to school and they will bring home a coupon attached to it for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  This program runs from October thru March.  HAPPY READING!!!

MOBYMAX CONTEST:
Our second winner of the contest is: KENDALL!! She chose a MobyMax hat as her prize. Way to go, Kendall! Our contest continues for one more week. The last winner will be chosen next Monday.
SNACK REMINDER:
Our class has one snack break in the morning. Please pack your child a healthy snack to support their learning. If your child chooses to have an afternoon snack, please pack an extra so they can eat it during afternoon recess. Thank you!
Classroom Halloween Party: We will be having a class party on Thursday, October 31. I will be sending more information about this tomorrow.

This Week…

  • A new homework packet went home today. It is due next Monday, Oct. 9. A spelling list should come home as well.
  • We have library on Wednesday. Please remind  your third grader to return their books so they will be able to check out new ones.
  • Just a friendly reminder about snacks: Please help your child to pack one healthy snack for our morning snack time. We do not have a lot of time so just one snack works best. Students may have another snack at our afternoon recess if they wish.
  • There will be a PTC meeting this Thursday, Oct. 5 in the library from 6:30-7:30pm.
  • This Friday is Popcorn Friday!

THANK YOU!
Ms Van Arkel   🙂

A few reminders!

We had a great day back to school! It’s good to be back together and hear all about the fun and family times from break!

I  want to remind you of a few things:
Our classroom is peanut-free. Please remember this with classroom snacks and birthday treats. It is recommended to not bring in food for birthday treats. Here is the nut safe letter that was sent at the beginning of the year. Thank you!
Nut Safe Letter

Winter is here! Please make sure your child is prepared with boots, snow pants, gloves, and hat. It is helpful to have your child’s name in their gear as well. An extra set of gym shoes is needed for P.E. too. Thank you!

It’s flu season! We often clean our desks, door handles,  and surface areas in order to keep the germs away, but we are running out of Lysol wipes. If you are able, we would appreciate any donations to our classroom. Thank you!

A Few Things….

We had a great time celebrating our Milton Hershey day in math today. We practiced area, perimeter, graphing, and mass. These are concepts we will be working on later in the year so it was great to get a head start.

Picture Day is MONDAY!!

Picture day is Monday! A picture ordering envelope was sent home on Thursday. If you wish to order, please send in the envelope on Monday. Thanks!

Snacks: We have a morning snack break every day. Please help your child to remember to put a snack in their backpack at night. It is most helpful when students bring one item for our morning snack time as we do not have much time to be eating all morning so it is usually a quick break for us. Please no candy.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Ms Van Arkel

Math Test and a Reminder!

Hi Parents,

Unit 12 in math was a short one and that means  we will be ready for our test on Thursday. We will review on Wednesday so look for that review page coming home.

Just a reminder!
Please help your third grader remember to bring a morning snack each day. We have had a lot of students forgetting lately. This would be a great responsibility for your third grader to pack in his/her backpack each evening or morning. This should be one small, healthy snack. Please no candy. Thanks for your help!
