This Week…

New spelling words are coming home today. We are working on long i and short i patterns.  We will have our spelling test on Friday.

We have been studying movement in Social Studies. Today we reviewed and the review sheet went home tonight. Please take a look at this with your third grader. Tomorrow, we will have a short quiz to check understanding.

Continue practicing multiplication and division facts at home. I sent a page home today that tells about xtra math. It is an online math practice site. Please use that page for directions on how to access it. The site will have each student start out practicing addition and subtraction. When they pass, they move on to multiplication.

Our Halloween Party will be Thursday, Oct. 30 from 2:30-3:30.

Update!!

I really enjoyed meeting with you all this week for conferences! It’s great to share the wonderful things happening in third grade! Thanks for sharing your child with me.

Here’s an update:

We had a lot of fun with a math activity today. Each student had a chance to jump and we recorded data on how far they jumped in feet. We created a tally chart and a frequency chart and then created a line plot. Ask your child all about it!

We will go to the book fair on Monday to preview. Your child will come home with a wish list. Please talk about this with your child. If you decide to purchase, please send in the money for Wednesday.

The talent show is coming! Please check out Mrs. Bretz’s blog for details.

We will have our spelling dictation on Tuesday. Please review the spelling words with your third grader. They are:  least  fast  just  burst  strip  stick  strike  artist  almost  student  strong  start  blast  straw  street
Challenge words: events  competition  stroke  teammate  distance

Here is an update from Ms VanderStel about science:
We just finished our unit on Force and Motion.  Within this unit, we described a path and direction of a moving object, experimented with speed and distance, discussed how gravity pulls a force to earth, and analyzed and described simple machines.  Our next unit on Light is very short.  You can expect another test next Friday.  In this unit students will explain man-made and natural light forms.  They will be able to demonstrate that light travels in a straight path and that shadows are made by placing an object in a path of light.  On Tuesday, there will be a homework assignment with three big vocabulary words:  translucent, opaque, and transparent.

Please bring in a flashlight for science on Monday and Tuesday.

3rd Grade News!

We have new spelling words.  We practiced our alphabetical order skills with our new words and then the list went home. Our new words are:  tight, while, show, stone, bright, whole, window, time, follow, close, flight, tide, float, broke, throat.
We are studying the long i and long o spelling patterns.

In Math, we are beginning a new unit that will cover the 6s, 7s, and 8s multiplication facts. We started learning the 6s facts yesterday. It is very very important that multiplication facts are practiced regularly at home. Please continue to use the math fact log and have it turned in on Mondays. Thanks!

I am looking for a few parent volunteers to help with math fact practice (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) on Wednesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:00-3:30. Please email me and let me know if you are available to help. Thanks!

Jet’s Pizza night is tonight (Dec. 4)! Don’t forget to mention Georgetown and our class!!

Next week is our Holiday Shop. More information will be coming.

Spelling Words

Here are the spelling words that were introduced today. Our focus is short a and short e words. Your third grader should have brought home a piece of paper where they wrote them down. We will be practicing these words using word work activities and will have a spelling test next Thursday or Friday. Please practice them at home as well. Using them in sentences is a great way to practice. I also have spelling activities (not necessarily with these specific words, but helpful to practice spelling) under the Spelling heading on the right side of the blog.

sat, send, went, past, belt, felt, next, hand, grand, lend, last, best, stand, stamp, checked
