Third Grade Polar Express Party!

Parents,

We have been hard at work as a Third Grade Team getting all the details set for the big Polar Express Party! As a reminder, the party will be next Thursday, December 19th from 9-10:30 am.

Each classroom teacher will be able to have ten parent volunteers (40 total volunteers for the grade). We will be prioritizing parents who were not able to be a part of the Halloween party or class field trip; if we have fewer than ten interested parents who were NOT a part of either of those events, we will do a “lottery” like drawing for the remaining parents interested. Unfortunately due to how large this event is in a small space, we will not be able to have any parents except those who have been confirmed by the teacher as volunteers come to the party. Thank you for your understanding in this!

Please note that parent volunteers will need:

1) To have a background check filled out

2) To be to school by 8:30 am the day of the party

3) To have alternate plans for younger siblings (because there are already 100 students and 44 adults all in one space!)

Please email us about interest in volunteering by the end of the school day this Friday, December 13th. Please also consider helping out by signing up to donate party supplies on the Sign Up Genius HERE, as well. This can also be found on the blog.

Thanks so much – we are looking forward to next Thursday!

POLAR EXPRESS PARTY!

We will be having our annual Polar Express Party on Thursday, December 20 from 9:00 – 10:30am.  We need donations and volunteers to make this fun event happen.  Click on the Polar Express picture to donate items and volunteer to help with a game or craft.  Please send all donated items to school by Wednesday, December 19.  If you are volunteering to be at the party, please come at 8:30am that day to get directions for your game or craft.

Polar Express Party Information

Our party will be from 9:15-10:30 on Thursday, December 18th, aboard the 3rd grade classroom Polar Express.  If you are interested in helping run a center on the day of the party, or are willing to donate items, please click on the Polar Express picture below (for the Volunteer Spot link). We would like each child to send in $1.00 to cover the cost of the Christmas party.  We are planning crafts, games, and snacks related to the Polar Express theme and will be combining all of the 3rd grade classes.

Also, we will be having a gift exchange within our own classroom, please help your child select a gift of approximately $3.00-$5.00. Girls will choose a gift for a girl and boys will choose a gift for a boy. The gifts need to be wrapped and labeled to a “Girl” or “Boy.”  Please make sure that your child writes his/her name ,so we know whom to thank. The children may start bringing them in as soon as you would like to send them.  Make sure your child’s gift is here by Monday, December 15.

If  you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

3rd Grade News!

We have new spelling words.  We practiced our alphabetical order skills with our new words and then the list went home. Our new words are:  tight, while, show, stone, bright, whole, window, time, follow, close, flight, tide, float, broke, throat.
We are studying the long i and long o spelling patterns.

In Math, we are beginning a new unit that will cover the 6s, 7s, and 8s multiplication facts. We started learning the 6s facts yesterday. It is very very important that multiplication facts are practiced regularly at home. Please continue to use the math fact log and have it turned in on Mondays. Thanks!

I am looking for a few parent volunteers to help with math fact practice (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) on Wednesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:00-3:30. Please email me and let me know if you are available to help. Thanks!

Background Check for Volunteers

To ensure safety for all of our students, we are adding a layer of protection that requires all volunteers to submit a background check.  You will receive the paperwork home with your packet of student information forms that must be completed at the start of the school year.

The form must be completed for parents who plan to support classroom instruction (web reading, center support, general classroom assistance, and field trips).  Forms will arrive home in the start up packets.  You can also stop by the office and pick up a form to complete or you can download this, complete it at home and send it to school.  All information will be submitted to the Human Resources Department.  FORM:  Background Check Form

Each teacher will have a list of parents who have completed the background check.  Volunteers for classroom work and field trips will be pulled from these lists.

Thank you for you help in ensuring that we have a safe climate for learning.

Michigan Celebration- HELP!

We have learned so much about Michigan this year and it’s time we celebrate our great state! We will be celebrating by making salt dough maps of Michigan. On these maps the students will show the landforms and characteristics they  have learned about.

This is where we need some volunteers. We will need a lot of salt dough. The recipe is listed below, if you would be willing to make some, that would be great. Please place it in a zip loc bag and send it in with your son or daughter by Thursday, June 3. Thanks!

Basic Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of fine salt
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of water (may add more)

Instructions:

  • In a large bowl, combine the salt and the flour
  • Make a well in the salt/flour mixture and add the water
  • Knead until smooth and shape into a ball

Thanks for helping!
