Fraction Test

We have wrapped up our fraction unit!!! That means our fraction test will be on Tuesday. I know it is the last week of school, but still very important for our third graders to to their best work and finish strong. Please encourage them to maintain focus in class and listen attentively and to just do their best.
Your child brought home a fraction review page on Friday. Please go over these problems and problems like it. It will be important for your child to know numerator, denominator, unit fraction and be able to label fractions on a number line.
For example:

Please review equivalent fractions. For example  1/2 = 2/4, 3/6, 4/8. We have used fraction strips in class to demonstrate equivalent fractions as well. For example:

We have also compared fractions using word problems. For example:

Lily ate 2/8 of a pizza and Joe ate 6/8 of a pizza. Who ate more pizza?   Since it is the same unit fraction (eighths), we look at the numerator and know that 6 is more than 8 so Joe ate more.

Students should also remember that the larger the denominator, the smaller the part. For example:

Lauren ate 2/3 of a candy bar. Logan ate 2/4 of a candy bar. Who ate more?  We know that a candy bar cut into fourths will have smaller pieces than a candy bar cut into thirds. 2/3 is larger than 2/4 so Lauren ate more.

Thank you for supporting your third grader!!
Have a nice weekend  🙂
