Today in class, we started our Michigan Geography unit. We began by thinking of some facts we already know about Michigan. Then we did some exploring by looking at the map of Michigan. We had a great time looking closely at the map. Each partner group contributed a question that we hope to answer during our studies of Michigan.

Social Studies Update

In third grade we study Michigan. We have started our Geography unit and have been learning about relative and absolute location and natural and human characteristics.  We have also started to learn about the landforms and bodies of water in Michigan.
Today we got out the maps to identify these places:

LANDFORMS in Michigan:
– Peninsulas: Upper and Lower Peninsula
– Islands: Mackinac Island, Beaver Island, Isle Royale
– Mountains: Porcupine Mountains, Huron Mountains
– Sand Dunes: Sleeping Bear Dunes

BODIES OF WATER in Michigan:
– Great lakes: Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Superior
– Rivers: the Grand River
– Waterfalls: Tahquamenon Falls
– Bays: Grand Traverse Bay, Saginaw Bay

We had fun looking at the Map of Michigan:

Social Studies Quiz and Test

Parents,
A review sheet should be coming home today for the social studies quiz on Monday. The short quiz will cover what we have studied about the movement of people, goods, and ideas. Please remind your third grader to study this for Monday. Thank you.

I am planning to have our Geography test on Thursday. I will let you know if that changes due to our four day week, but so far we are on schedule for the test next week. We will review in class and a review sheet will come home too.

Have a great weekend!   🙂

Geography Map Project

Today, the information went home for the social studies map project. Your child should have 3 things: A Michigan map, a red sheet with directions/rubric, and the natural and human characteristics page (green sheet).  In class we identified the natural characteristics and human characteristics of Michigan. This includes landforms, bodies of water, cities, highways, lighthouses, and bridges.  We have been learning about these and have identified them on the Michigan map.

As part of the project your child should label these places on the Michigan map that was provided.  Don’t forget neatness and color. There is a checklist that also goes with the project to make sure full points are received.

We have identified these characteristics in class, however, your child may need some guidance to label correctly and find specific locations. You may also use any notes from class.

The map is Due Friday, October 10.

Have fun with your map! Let me know if you have any questions!

Geography Project

Geography Project:

***Please Note: the information will come home tomorrow. I had planned on today, but during our social studies lesson we had a visitor in our class (a bee!). It became a distraction and to keep us all safe we spent the last part of our day with an extra recess!  🙂  So we will finish up the project information tomorrow, but here is my blog post so you know what to expect:

Social Studies

We have been studying Michigan geography in Social Studies. Today and yesterday we have learned about location. We talked about Absolute Location and Relative Location. Absolute location is like an exact location or like an address. Relative location is a location in relation to something else and usually uses the words north, south, east, and west.
If we wanted the absolute location of our school we would give the address. Relative location would be: west of Subway.
In class we have been working on learning the relative location of Michigan. We got our the maps today and looked at Michigan in relation to other states. Example:  Michigan is North of Tennessee, Michigan is East of Minnesota, etc. We will be working on this the next few days and will have our assessment on Friday. I will let you know if this day changes.
