Update: Week of December 2

Here is an update of our learning in 3rd grade:

Writing: We are publishing our persuasive speeches and look forward to sharing our pieces with our classmates on Friday. This week, we will also begin a new writing unit: The Art of Information Writing. We will learn strategies to write in a way that teaches our reader.

Math: We have started our third math unit and we have studied measurement with inches, half inch, quarter inch as well as liquid volume with gallons, quarts, pints, cups, liters, milliliters. We will move into time and elapsed time as well. Please check with your child about what math facts they will be working on this Friday for their practice page.

Reading: We have learned so many strategies for reading mystery books and we are learning that these strategies can be used with all fiction books. We have learned what it means to read with our mind on ‘high-alert’ and be an active reader. We will be moving into our next unit and will learn new strategies for reading informational text.

Social Studies: We continue our study of Michigan geography and this week we will learn about the natural resources in Michigan.

Homework:
Reading and Math Fact Log due every Monday.
Please help your child remember to sign on the days they read and practice facts.

Our Class Making A Difference:
As we enter the winter months, we realize that not everyone has access to warm socks, hats, gloves, or mittens. These are essential items for a Michigan winter! Our class would like to bless others by collecting these items to then be donated to area shelters and/or food pantries so they can be distributed to those in need.

If you are able, please send in new socks, hats, gloves/mittens. All sizes, kids through adult!
We will collect items through December 16. I will plan to drop the items off, but if you have a
place in mind and would be willing to do a drop off, please let me know!

Here is a peek at our Polar Express party! We had a great time. THANK YOU to all who volunteered and donated items.

With two weeks off from school, I have reminded the third graders to continue their reading and math fact practice. Please help your child to remember to log on to MobyMax or use their flashcards for practice. They will know what math facts they need to practice. Thanks!

I wish you all a happy Holiday break!

Holiday Party Reminder!

Parents,

Just a reminder about our Holiday Party next Thursday, December 21! All the information can be found HERE on the blog post from a few weeks ago.
If you are planning to come to the party, make sure you have filled out a background check form: HERE.
Thank  you!

By next Wednesday (12/20):

  • send in a wrapped box
  • send in a small gift that your child will pass out to each classmate (26 students in our class). Gift suggestions: erasers, pencils, wrapped candy, small party favor, bookmark, etc.
****If you have questions, please let me know!

Holiday Party!!

All aboard the 3rd grade Polar Express! Our party will be from 9:15-10:30 on Wednesday, December 21st.  If you are interested in helping run a center on the day of the party, or are willing to donate items, please click on the Polar Express picture below (for the Signup Genius link, enter your email, and click next). We will be decorating cookies and drinking hot chocolate at the Christmas party.  We are planning crafts, games, and snacks related to the Polar Express theme and will be combining all of the 3rd grade classes.

Also for a gift exchange, we would like each child to bring in a small item for each child in their class. Some ideas are pencils, treats, erasers, or small party items from the store. We would also like each child to bring in a box wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper. The box needs to be opened without unwrapping it (so either wrap the lid separately or choose a box with flaps that can open and close). The kids will be putting the items they brought to share in each other’s boxes. The children may start bringing them in as soon as you would like to send them.  Make sure your child’s box is here by Monday, December 19th.

If  you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
