Week of June 4: our last week!!

I can’t believe it! The last week of school! It has been a fabulous year of learning, fun, and friendships! Thank you for all the ways you have supported your child’s education.

A few things:
Make sure your child has their backpack each day this week. You will see folders and papers coming home. We are cleaning out lockers and desks!

Remind your third grader to return library books.

Friday is a half day. Dismissal is at 12:15pm.

Our class did an outstanding job of presenting their biography research work today!! Thanks to all who came to see our museum. Check it out:

Week of May 7: Update and Snapshot of our Learning!

  • We will not have a homework packet consistently for the remainder of the school year. At this point in the year we are focusing on other areas and gearing up for MSTEP. If a homework page is sent home, I will let you know. The expectation is that students continue with weekly work of reading and math practice by way of flashcards, math apps, practice pages, moby max, etc.
  • Multiplication Fluency Practice: We will have our practice page this Friday. Please ask your third grader what facts they should be practicing so they can continue to make progress!
  • MobyMax as homework practice:  This is the last day for the MobyMax contest. Students can earn 1 point for each question they answer correctly within a lesson topic that is passed. Top 5 students in our class earn a prize and the next 25 will earn a smaller prize. Please use this as homework practice.
Third graders will need to log onto Clever to access MobyMax. Let me know if you have forgotten how to do this. There is a link on the right side of the blog under AT HOME links.  I will also continue to have all kids practice fluency here at school.
  • We will have our Math Test on Wednesday. This will cover unit fractions, fractions on a number line, and equivalent fractions. We will review today and tomorrow in class.  A review page will come home today.
  • We go to library on Friday. Please remind your third grader to bring back their books so they can get new ones.
  • Biography research homework: Please help your third grader look up a picture of the person they are researching. They should print it off and bring it to school this week. If you do not have a printer at home, please let me know. Thanks!
  • AS A REMINDER: Friday is an early release. Dismissal is at 12:15

Here is a snapshot of a few things that we have been working on in third grade:

Week of January 8!

Wow! I can’t believe it’s January! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break!

  • A new homework packet will be coming home today. It is due next Monday, January 15. A spelling pre-test with a new spelling word list should come home as well. These words should be practiced for the spelling test on Friday.
  • Multiplication Fluency Practice: You will see a practice page come home today. This was completed on Friday. Attached to this practice page will be a note saying NOT YET or GOT IT! This let’s you and your third grader know what facts will need to be practiced for this Friday. Your third grader keeps track of their own progress on a graph here at school so they will know exactly what facts they should be working on.
  • We have library on Friday. Please help your third grader to remember to bring their books back.
  • Early Release is this Friday, January 12. Dismissal is at 12:15pm.

News This Week!

A few things to know about this coming week:

  • Multiplication Flashcards: We have started learning multiplication and have begun with the 5s facts. We have been learning different ways to understand multiplication- drawings, repeated addition, and arrays. Your child has a flashcard folder. This will come home each night for practice and should be sent back each day to school so they can be used in class.
  • Library: We have library on Wednesday. You may have seen books come home last week. Your child’s goal is to make sure they choose at least 2 good-fit books and they may choose 1 for fun. Please help your child remember to return books to school when they are done.
  • Homework Packet: A homework packet is coming home today (Monday). It will be due next Monday. The packet consists of 2 math pages and a reading and math fact log.
  • Social Studies: Our first unit is Michigan Geography. We have been studying relative and absolute location. A study guide will come home today. We will have a quiz on Wednesday.
  • Spelling: Spelling and Word Study will start next week.

Thank you!
Let me know if you have questions.

Spelling, Flashcards, Homework, and Library!

Today we started a new spelling unit. Each Monday, we take a spelling pre-test and this determines if the regular list or the challenge list will go home. We have discussed that we each have different lists because we are different learners and that’s ok! You should see a spelling list come home tonight. This can stay at home and should be practiced throughout the week. We will have our spelling test on Friday.

Please practice the math facts at home with your third grader and then make sure the green folder goes back in the blue daily folder to come back to school.
During math today, students practiced the 5s facts with a partner. They quizzed their friend and placed the flashcards in two piles: if they didn’t know the product ‘in a snap’ then it went in the NOT YET pile. If they said the answer right away it went in the GOT IT pile. Then, just to be sure, they quizzed the GOT IT pile again.
Try this strategy at home when practicing with your third grader.

Today we talked about our own personal reading life and what makes reading work for us. We talked about needing a quiet, comfortable space without distractions as well as making sure we choose a good-fit book that we are interested in. To prepare for our lesson tomorrow, each student should bring in a favorite book.

We went to the library today. Your child should come home with a few books. We will talk about reading counts in class. When a student is done reading their book, they sign up to take a test and then during reading time, we do our best to make our way through the list of students who signed up. Please check in with your third grader about what books they have chosen.

We are off to another great week in 3rd grade!!  🙂

A Few Things…

Hi Families,

I want to let you know of a few important things coming up:

1. We will have library tomorrow (Thursday). This is a change due to no school Friday. Please help your child remember to bring books to return and to get new ‘good-fit’ books.

2. No school for students on Friday. Have a nice weekend!

3. New spelling words were introduced this week. We will have our sentence dictation test next week. They are: slip, fish, pick, rocks, lunch, gift, thing, inch, truck, pond, jump, socks, dish, thump, from
We are focusing on short o and short u.

4.On Thursday, a Math Fact Practice Log will be coming home. This is for at-home practice, but will be returned each Monday. It is very important that your third grader practice facts at home and build fluency. I will have a note attached with this, but please let me know if you have any questions.

5. We have begun learning multiplication. We have started learning the 5s facts. Please practice with your third grader. Over the next few weeks, we will begin to build our multiplication sundaes. As your child passes a practice page for each count-by, they will receive a piece of the sundae. For example, when they pass the 1s practice page, they receive the bowl. When they pass the 2s, they receive the banana, etc. We will talk about how each student will be working at their own pace and may not pass on the first try. This tells us we will need to keep practicing our facts. Our multiplication sundaes will all look different as we pass our facts at different times. Our goal is to practice, practice, practice and to keep improving.

6. I look forward to meeting with you at conferences  next week and sharing the wonderful things happening in third grade. You should have received a reminder slip about your conference day and time (blue paper). Please let me know if you have not. Thanks!

Coming Up!

We have Library on Friday! Please help me in reminding your son or daughter to get reading counts books to read at home. When finished there will be a sign-up sheet for quizzes in the classroom.

If you are able, please have your third grader bring in a spiral notebook. We will be using these as math journals this year. If you are unable to get one, I do have a few extras.

Summer Reading!

Georgetown School Library Open This Summer!!
This summer, our school library will be open for students to check out books. On Tuesdays, 10:00-12:00, students can stop by school to check out books and visit with their favorite teachers. Research has shown that students who choose to read throughout the summer are more successful readers. Help to establish healthy reading habits and mark this on your calendars. Looking forward to seeing all of you there!
