Quiz tomorrow!

We will have our History quiz tomorrow. The review was sent home yesterday. At the top of the page it says The British in Michigan. We also did a review this morning by putting events in the correct order. This page will be good to review and should come home today. Thanks for helping your child study and review the material.

Social Studies Quiz

We have been learning about Michigan history and the fur trade. We will have a quiz tomorrow over what we have studied the last few days. Your child should have brought home a study sheet tonight. If it was not brought home, here’s the important information to study:

Timeline of Events:
1. French explorers wanted to sail to China.
2. They started to explore The Great Lakes.
3. They found beaver furs.
4. The fur trade began.
5. The British became interested in the fur trade.

Also a few things to remember:
*French Missionaries also came to Michigan. One of them was Father Marquette.
*The American Indians traded because they wanted goods that the French had.
*The fur trade began about 400 years ago.

Please help your third grader study for the quiz tonight. Thanks!

Tonight’s homework

We will have a History quiz tomorrow over our first lesson that we have been studying since last week. We made a review sheet in class today. On that review sheet are some key vocabulary words.

History: the study of the past
Historian: A person who studies the past.  We talked about how historians ask questions and use sources to learn about the past. They use:
Primary sources:  things from the past such as old photos, old maps, diaries, newspaper articles.
Secondary sources: things about the past such as a text book written about the past. Decade:  ten years.

Your child should have their review sheet in their homework folder.

****On a side note, we are completely out of tissue in our classroom. If you are able to donate, we would appreciate it. Thanks!

Economics Quiz

We will have an Economics quiz tomorrow (Tuesday). Over the last few days we have been learning about economic activities of Michigan. We have learned that Manufacturing and Agriculture are two important economic activities of Michigan. We have talked about the goods that are produced from these economic activities and have identified the places on the map that grow or manufacture these goods

For example:    Manufacturing in Michigan produces:   furniture, baby food, cereal, cars, etc.
Agriculture in Michigan produces: cherries, blueberries, apples, celery, etc.

Please help your child to understand the important Economic Activities and goods that they produce.

Homework!

There are two things for tonight’s homework;

1. Math Remembering page 1-6

2. Study for social studies quiz.
We will have a social studies quiz tomorrow on landforms and bodies of water of Michigan. Please help your third grader know the 4 landforms (sand dunes, peninsulas, islands, and mountains ) as well as the 4 bodies of water (lakes, bays, rivers, waterfalls). They should also be able to give one Michigan example for each.

This week:

We will have a short economics quiz tomorrow on economic activities of Michigan.

We will be reviewing for the Recycling test which will be on Friday.

Our math test will be next Tuesday. We will spend this week reviewing and playing multiplication games.

This week we are starting to learn about research writing. Today we brainstormed topics that we are experts on. Then we listed facts that we know about this topic. Our animal unit in science will go very nicely with our research as we will soon choose an animal to research and write about.

Please continue practicing math facts at home. Any practice helps! Thanks!

Look for new spelling words to come home this week.

Social Studies Quiz and Project

Today we reviewed the Vegetation and Climate of Michigan. A study page will come home today. Please help your child study for the quiz on Wednesday.

Geography Project:

Today, the information went home for the social studies map project. Your child should have 2 things: A Michigan map and an orange sheet with directions/rubric on one side and the natural and human characteristics on the other.  In class we identified the natural characteristics and human characteristics of Michigan. This includes landforms, bodies of water, cities, highways, lighthouses, and bridges.  We have been learning about these and have identified them on the Michigan map.

As part of the project your child should label these places on the Michigan map that was provided.  Don’t forget neatness and color. There is a checklist that also goes with the project to make sure full points are received.

We have identified these characteristics in class, however, your child may need some guidance to label correctly and find specific locations. You may also use any notes from class.

This project is due Monday, October 17.

Have fun with your map! Let me know if you have any questions!

Social Studies Review

Tonight’s homework is to review for the Social Studies quiz tomorrow. We have been studying absolute and relative location. Your third grader should be bringing home 2 review papers tonight. One we completed in class and the other is a U.S. map. Please use these to review and practice. For example, ask:   Michigan is East of_________. Then use north, south, and west. This is relative location. I encourage use of the map as a visual.
