Update: Week of January 28

Parents,
We start this week of with a SNOW DAY on Monday! Stay safe and warm!
Here is an update for the week ahead:

Math Test: We will have our unit 3 Math test some time this week! I can’t say a specific day yet, due to the snow days. This will cover measurement, time, elapsed time, and graphing. As soon as we get back in class, we will review and the review page will come home.

Math Practice Page:
Please help your third grader to continue practicing their math facts for the next practice page.

Homework: Continue with reading (use the reading calendar) and math fact practice as part of homework. MobyMax is a great way to have your third grader practice their math facts.

Social Studies: We have started to learn about Michigan History. We are learning to be historians and are understanding how primary and secondary sources are useful to learn about the past.

Writing: We have started our unit on writing realistic fiction. We will work on creating a story plan and learning to write an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Weekly Word Work: We have been continuing work with practicing word patterns, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. This is done using in class activities and hands-on learning so we do not have a word list that comes home.

READING COUNTS: The first marking period for Reading Counts ended a few weeks ago. Elizabeth, Breslin, Eden, and Faith met their reading goalsl!! They enjoyed a candy treat from Mrs. VandenBerg and also an ice cream treat from me!! Way to go, girls! Many students have been reading and have already started meeting their goal for the next Reading Counts marking period!

COMING UP:

Early Release: Friday, February 1. Dismissal at 12:15pm.

Winter Break: Monday- Tuesday, February 4 and 5. School resumes Wednesday, February 6.

3rd Grade Update: Week of December 17

Here is an update from our classroom:

Writing: We are working on writing conclusions to our informational writing. We will work on revising, editing, and writing a final draft.

Social Studies: We started studying Economics in Michigan. We have learned about scarcity, opportunity cost, and we have started learning about economic activities such as manufacturing and agriculture.

Math: We continue with our measurement unit and will begin a few lessons on telling time and using elapsed time. This would be great to practice at home, too! Third graders should keep practicing multiplication facts at home using MobyMax or flashcards.

Reading: We have been exploring nonfiction texts by identifying text features and new vocabulary words. We have also been taking notes as we read and gather facts and information from our reading. Third graders should continue with reading 20 minutes at least 5 days a week. Complete your December reading calendar over break and bring it back on January 7.

COMING UP:

Our Polar Express party is on Thursday, Dec. 20. Students may wear pajamas if they would like. ***If you are donating items, please send them in on or before Wednesday.

Popcorn Friday is this Friday, the 21st.

HOLIDAY VACATION starts Monday, December 24. School resumes Monday, January 7!

Reading Calendar Homework

CLASSROOM READING CALENDAR HOMEWORK
Our class is participating in the BOOK IT! Program to encourage reading at home. As third graders, reading is a homework expectation. You will receive a calendar starting October through March at the beginning of each month. Each time your child reads at home they should mark it on their calendar. The recommendation is to read for at least 20 minutes at least 5 days a week. That’s 400+ minutes a month!!

At the end of each month the calendar should be returned to school and your child will receive a coupon for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

This calendar will also serve as our classroom reading log. When a completed calendar is turned in at the end of the month, students will receive the coupon for pizza and also a special prize from me!

Summer Learning

Dear Parents,

Studies have shown that students can lose up to 50% of learning during the summer vacation. Georgetown is challenging you and your child to “KEEP ON LEARNING” this summer to prevent summer slide. There are two ways to record your learning time:

Our goals for students over the summer are below. Students who reach or exceed goals will be entered into a drawing for an Amazon Gift Card (1 per grade). This is for their grade next year.

~Learning Update~

Here’s what we have been learning about in third grade:

Writing: We have finished our Literary Essay unit and then completed our Post Assessment of opinion writing before Spring Break. We will now begin to practice constructed response writing as well as begin our Core Democratic Values writing work that goes along with our Social Studies Unit.

Science: We will begin studying animals and adaptations!

Math: We will spend a few days doing some review and activities with area and perimeter and then we begin our fraction unit this week.

Reading: We have been reading biography books and with each book the students read, they complete a comprehension card to summarize the important facts they have learned about a person in history. We will be working on choosing a person to study and write about.

Reading Counts Winners and Millionaire Winners!

We celebrated students who achieved reading goals today. Some of our students received gift cards to TARGET for achieving reading goals and others received a certificate and Barnes and Noble Card for reading 1,000,000 words or MORE.

Congratulations to all the hard working and dedicated readers!!

3rd Grade Update!

Here’s what’s happening in 3rd Grade:

Writing: We are finishing up our realistic fiction writing. We have learned to think of an experience in our own life and add new, realistic parts to make the story interesting. We have made up characters and learned to use character traits. We continue working on Show not Tell. We used a story mountain to plan for our writing.

Social Studies: We are finishing up our unit on Michigan History. We will be learning about how Michigan became a state. Our unit test will be next week.

Math: We have been working on addition and subtraction. Much of this lesson has been review, but we have also learned about rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. Our unit test will be next week.

Reading: We have started our Series Book Clubs. Each student is in a group and they have a daily reading assignment that must be completed for them to meet and discuss with their group. The groups discuss the questions and predictions they have as well as what the character is doing and how they change in the story.

Please continue a consistent routine of reading 20 minutes (5 days a week) and math fact practice (at least 5 minutes/5 days a week).

Christmas Break Reading and Math Facts!

Parents,
It will be so important for your third grader to continue reading and math fact practice over the holiday break. Please remind your third grader to log on to MobyMax to work on math facts (or use flash cards) as well as continue with their daily reading.
