For your information-

Multiplication flashcards:
Today we started our math unit on multiplication. We have started with the 5s facts. In your child’s daily folder will be a parent letter and an envelope with flashcards. We will be filling this envelope with flashcards. It should go home for nightly practice and be sent back to school each day as we will use the flashcards in class.
***It is very important to make fact practice part of your nightly routine. We will be learning a lot of multiplication facts and they will be crucial to know as we move on in math concepts this year.

Spelling Words:
We started our spelling work today. Each Monday, we will take a pre-test that will determine the word list for each student. During the week we will use activities to practice the words and the spelling concept. On Fridays, we will have a spelling test. It will be important to practice these words at home during the week. One of the best ways to do this is to write them out in sentences. I also have spelling activities linked to the right side of the blog. Spelling City is a great one!

Third Grade Update!

Homework Tonight: Math page 3-12. Spelling words went home today also (for the test on Friday). A book order went home and if you are interested in ordering, it is due by next Monday 1/26.

Writing: We have been working on informational writing. Each writer has chosen a topic that they know a lot about. We are learning to organize our information and add details so our reader will learn new facts about our topic.

Reading: We are exploring informational text in reading and are learning what authors to do teach their readers. We have been discussing main idea/details, paraphrasing, and text features.

Math: We have been reviewing addition strategies and are moving on to subtraction with ungrouping. Much of this is review from second grade math concepts.

Social Studies: We are leaning all about economics in Michigan such as scarcity, opportunity cost, manufacturing, and agriculture.

This Week!

New spelling words are coming home today. Please help your son/daughter practice them throughout the week. The spelling test will be on Friday.
Please help your child to remember to be consistent with reading at home and math fact practice at home. Reading and Math logs are to be returned every Monday to earn a classroom ticket. Thank you!
Please remember to send winter clothing to school. We still have outdoor recess when it is cold and snowy. Thank you!

Social Studies Quiz Tomorrow

Hi Parents,

In social studies, we have been learning about how we interact with the environment. We do this by modifying and adapting to the environment. We talked about this last week and we reviewed more of this today. We will have a short quiz on this tomorrow to check understanding. A review page will come home tonight.

We took the spelling pretest today and new words are going home. The test will be on Friday.

3rd Grade Update

Hi Parents,
We’ve been working hard in third grade! Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Writing:  We are working on publishing our first personal narrative and will begin our next personal narrative unit. We are learning strategies for good writing such as an interesting lead and ending as well as using describing words and detail to show not tell.

Word Work/Grammar:  Our word work will look a little different. We will be focusing on short vowels this week. Today we did a pretest to determine what words each student would work on. These words went home today and should be practiced throughout the week. The spelling test will be this Friday.

Math: We have been moving through our first math unit that covers multiplication and division. We have started working on our multiplication sundaes. The sundaes are a fun way to help us practice. After passing multiplication facts, an ingredient to the sundae can be added. Please help your child practice multiplication facts at home. Practice does not have to take a long time, but regular practice will be a great help as we move along in math concepts this year.

Reading: We have been learning about characteristics of being a reader. We’ve learned about choosing a good- fit book, how to talk to our partner about reading,  how to listen to our partner, how to clear up confusion when we read, and how to use strategies to help us understand what we read.

Social Studies: In third grade, we learn all about Michigan. We have learned that geography is the study of places and that geographers ask questions. We have also learned about the natural and human characteristics of Michigan. We have located the landforms and bodies of water in Michigan too. We love learning about our state!

Spelling Words, Math Sundae, and a Quiz

A few things for you to know about:

Word Work Words went home yesterday. These words will be worked on and studied in class for two weeks. We will have a spelling dictation test next Friday 9/26. The words are:  along, while, might, next, sound, about, because, have, from, which    Please help your child practice these words at home.

In third grade, we learn and study our multiplication facts. To help us learn in a fun way, we use a multiplication sundae. We will do fact quizzes on Fridays. When a student passes the quiz they will earn a piece to their sundae. This is a ‘go at your own pace’ activity. It’s a fun way to challenge ourselves and help us practice our facts. We will be working on our sundaes most of the year. We celebrate by eating sundaes (the ingredients that have been earned) at the end of the school year! Please help your child practice their facts at home!

We have been studying location in social studies. A short quiz will be tomorrow. It will cover:

Absolute Location:   The exact location of a place. Like an address.
Relative Location:  The location of a place in relation to another place.
Ex: our school is by Jet’s pizza.

We have also been studying direction words and how to use them as it relates to Michigan. Example:  Michigan is north of Indiana, Michigan is south of Canada.

Please study these concepts at home tonight!
