Week of January 27, 2020

News from our third grade class:

Homework Reminder:
I did not send home a new math fact and reading log this week. I will be talking with the class about how they will be moving to more independence with this. This is an opportunity for them to show responsibility with their reading and math fact practice without using an at -home log.  Please continue the consistent reading and math fact practice at home- even making up your own chart to keep track! This is often the time of year where our third graders show growth and it’s the at-home practice that helps to maintain all their hard work. Thank you!

Homework Starting Wednesday: On Wednesday, your child will have a new homework assignment that they will need to complete on the computer. They will need to get on Clever to access this.  They may complete the assignment any time between Wednesday, the 29th and Tuesday, the 4th.

Valentine’s Day- REMINDER:
An email was sent last week regarding Valentine’s Day. Our class will be doing some activities throughout the day on Friday, Feb. 14. We will not need parent volunteers or donations. We will make Valentine bags in class. If your child chooses to pass out Valentine cards, please use the class list that was sent home last week.

Snack Donations: Our class could use a few snack donations to use on the days when a student forgets. Pretzels or graham crackers work well. If you are able to donate, please send it in with your child. We appreciate it!!

LOOKING AHEAD

Friday, January 31- early release. Dismissal at 12:15pm

WINTER BREAK. NO SCHOOL Monday February, 3 and Tuesday, February 4. School resumes on Wednesday, February 5.

Update: Week of February 11

Parents,
Here is an update for the week:

WRITING: We will be working on finishing our realistic fiction stories.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We continue learning about the History of Michigan and will begin learning about The Three Fires- Ottawa, Potawatomi, and Ojibwa.

MATH: We started unit 4 today. We reviewed place value drawings. We will work on using place value drawings as well as rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, and using 3 digit addition/subtraction in word problems.

READING: We are hoping to finish up our book clubs this week. We have enjoyed reading new books from a series and having discussions about characters in our stories.

An email was sent about Valentine’s Day information. We are making Valentine gift bags in class. Your child may bring in Valentine cards to pass out if they choose to. A class list was included in the email.  We will not need parent volunteers or donations sent in. We will be doing some whole group activities throughout the day on Thursday.

An update

We had an awesome time on our field trip yesterday! It was a neat experience to be snowshoeing while learning about animal habitats and adaptations. Pictures to come!

Our Valentine’s Party is on Friday from 12:45-1:45. Please remind your student to decorate a box or bag at home and bring it by Friday. Students may also bring in Valentines do pass out. A class list went home last week.

New word work words are:  learn, many, continue, school, future, little, important, world

We have been practicing our typing skills and have worked really hard on our typing challenges. Encourage your child to use the home row keys when they type. I have some practice sites linked to our blog on the right side.

A Few Reminders

Valentine’s Day:
Don’t forget to decorate a box for Valentine’s Day. A kleenex box will work well. If you can’t find a box, I have a few extra boxes and bags to decorate. Please let me know. Make sure it’s here by Thursday so the Valentines can be delivered. Class lists went home last week so Valentines can be addressed. Those can be sent in any time before Thursday. Thanks!

A Reminder for Science:
We are switching for Science again. Ms. VanderStel is beginning a unit on force and motion. If your child has a small toy car (like Hot Wheels), please have them bring it for a science activity tomorrow. Thanks!

3rd Grade Update

I hope you all enjoyed a few snow days and also have a wonderful weekend!

We will have our sentence dictation test on Monday. Please be sure to practice the words this weekend.

Please take time each night to read at home. This is very important to do every day to help us become better readers. Reading is part of homework each night.

Also, please practice multiplication and division facts at home. Knowing the facts fluently is crucial for upcoming math concepts. Practice the facts while riding in the car, at the dinner table, etc.

Parents, please let me know if you are able to help (or lead) the Valentine Party. I have some ideas and some of you have already volunteered to help or donate. Hopefully I will be contacting you early next week. The party will be Monday the 14th at 2:30. Thanks!

Please make sure your Valentines and Valentine box are at school by Monday, the 14th.

Have a great weekend!!

Valentine Party

We will be having our Valentine Party on Monday, February 14. We will begin our party around 2:30 and will end at about 3:20.

In preparation for the party, the third graders have an assignment to create their own mailbox for their Valentines to be delivered to. Please encourage your child to be as creative as they choose. For example: your child may choose to decorate a bag or a box (kleenex boxes or shoe boxes work well).

Please have these completed and brought to school by Friday, February 11.

Thanks!
