Holiday Party and Science Test!

Just a reminder to send in $1.00 for the holiday party and also send in a gift for the gift exchange. Boys bring in a boy gift and girls bring in a girl  gift ($3-$5).

Please see this note from Ms VanderStel regarding science next week:
We are wrapping up our Animal Adaptations Unit today.  The students did very well on the quiz they took yesterday.
Next week we are going to do a short unit on Sound.  We will have a test on this unit on Friday.  I know. . .it’s just before CHRISTMAS BREAK!!!!  But it is a fun unit with a lot of experiments.  I think the students will enjoy it and do very well.  To get a jump start on the vocabulary, they can visit my blog and find, Sound, under the science tab.

On Wednesday, we will be needing a watch that ticks.  If you have a watch that ticks and wouldn’t mind us borrowing it, please send it in to school by Wednesdaymorning.
 Thank you!

3rd Grade Update!

Hi Parents,
As we near the end of the year, we are working on concluding several lessons and units. You may see a few more assessments happening over the next few weeks for this reason. I will be sending review pages home and vocabulary words to study over the next week.
Writing: We have been working on opinion writing and taking a stand on a public issue. One public issue we’ve discussed is wind farms in the Great Lakes. We are in the process of generating our writing piece. We have also been working on using a Core Democratic Value that will support our opinion.  Look for Core Democratic Value vocabulary cards to come home. These would be great to study as we will have an assessment coming up probably the week of May 7.
Reading:  We have been studying genres of text the last few weeks. We’ve discussed realistic fiction, fantasy, science fiction, biography, autobiography, informational, and mystery. As students choose books they are asked to identify the genre of the text.
Math:  In math, we are concluding our unit on area and perimeter. We will take next week to review and plan on our assessment on Thursday. Please check out the blog post explaining a perimeter example problem.
Social Studies:
We are finishing our History unit and have learned about the events of Michigan becoming a state. We will review for the assessment so look for that to come home. The History assessment will be next Tuesday.
Word Work: We have been working on spelling patterns and will do our sentence dictation test today.

Social Studies Vocabulary

We are beginning our Economics unit for Social Studies. In this unit there are many vocabulary words that we will be learning. To help us learn these in a fun and interesting way Mr. Gort, a resource teacher in our building has created some vocabulary practice online. Please take a look at these with your child. So far we have learned about natural resources, human resources, and capital resources.
