3rd Grade Update!

Here’s what’s happening in 3rd Grade:

Writing: In writing we are finishing up our fiction writing as well as getting started on our research. Each student has chosen a person or a state to research. They have found a book on their topic from the library and have been doing a lot of reading. We have been gathering information that we are learning and writing down questions we still have. We have also organized our information and talked about what is most important. For example, to teach someone about a person, we might want to focus on the birth date, childhood, what makes them famous, other important facts, and death. If we are writing about a state we would organize our information into headings such as state capital, landforms, climate, and places to visit.

Math: We have been working hard on comparison problems using our multiplication and division.  Example: Sam has 6 books. Max has 36 books. How many times as many books does Max have than Sam.     6 times as many.       Continue working on multiplication facts at home, especially 6, 7, and 8 facts.

Reading: In reading we have started discussing expository text features. We have been reading non-fiction texts and we have noticed features such as a summary on the back of the book, table of contents, maps, diagrams, bold words, and many others. All of these features help readers gather information and understand the topic they are reading.

Spelling: Spelling lists went home yesterday. Spelling lists for Mrs. B’s group will come home at a different time. Please practice these words at home. Write them in sentences and spell them out loud. We will use them in class and then test in the next week.
